The dress of mothers: ideas, tips and rules to follow.
In a wedding ceremony, the bride and groom certainly play the leading role, but they are not the only ones. Indeed, it is a time for mothers to also claim their rightful role! Almost always, after the bride’s dress, the couple’s respective mother’s dresses get the most attention among the guests.
Like all important things, the mothers’ outfits also require respecting certain style rules, particularly with regard to color, fabric, and style.
Color: Elegance and good taste are key
White and similar colors, like ivory and champagne, should be avoided, particularly if you are the groom’s mother and don’t want to create disharmony with your future daughter-in-law on her wedding day!
There are also other colors that are best avoided, such as black, for obvious reasons, and red if you are beyond a certain age.
On the other hand, recommend colors are classic and elegant shades of blue, pastel colors or beige, green in both lighter and darker tones, antique pink, silver, and burgundy.
It is always a better idea to use solid-colored clothing rather than patterns. If the ceremony however, takes place in the morning, you can opt for a dress with a very delicate floral print.
Long or short dress?
If it is a daytime ceremony, the timeless classic sheath dress in tasteful colors is very appropriate. Perhaps further embellished by particular fabric details. It will prove to be a simple but very elegant choice. To make it even more special, you can enrich it with original accessories.
In addition to the sheath, a two piece look is also an excellent alternative that will certainly not go unnoticed for elegance and refinement.
Evening ceremonies are call for long dress, at least for very formal weddings.
Another idea that should not be underestimated is the use of pants. Consider an elegant suit with palazzo pants, or a flowing jumpsuit. Obviously in this case, the quality of the fabrics is key.
Using pants could be the most appropriate solution for those who, for various reasons, need to cover their legs and move more comfortably.
Ideal fabrics
Cotton, linen and all those everyday fabrics should be avoided. Instead, choose silk, crêpe, chiffon, georgette, organza, velvet and lace in very delicate textures.
Sore points: arms
Arms are a delicate subject for many women, for the bride and groom’s mothers it could prove to be a sore point. How to fix it?
Most opt for a wrap, but sometimes it is uncomfortable because it limits movements a bit and tends to never stay in place, while a shrug could be a good compromise if the chosen dress does not already cover the shoulders.
Accessories: the details that can make a difference
As far as accessories are concerned, the rules of good taste dictate elegant but understated. So if it is a daytime ceremony, the bag must be medium or small in size, also to be worn with a shoulder or arm strap. In the evening, on the other hand, embellished small clutches can highlight any outfit.
